CHIplace.org began as an effort of the CHI 2002 conference. Its goal was to extend the conference experience, letting people preview conference content, discuss issues, and make contact with other conference participants. Andreas Girgensohn and Alison Lee created and maintained the original version of CHIplace.
When CHI 2002 ended, responsibility for CHIplace passed to the CHI 2003 conference, with Kristina Höök and Martin Svensson of the SICS Humle Lab maintaining and enhancing the site. While retaining a close connection with the CHI conference, they also expanded the focus to include discussions of more general "hot topics" in human-computer interaction.
In July 2003, the GroupLens Research group at the University of Minnesota took over CHIplace. GroupLens aims to build on previous efforts of CHI volunteers and will continue to improve the CHIplace experience for our users, implementing new and innovative features.
